Obituary for Eugene J. Somerman

We are pained… to announce the passing of
Eugene Somerman, our father, brother and friend,
on Monday, January 13, 2020.

Eugene Joseph Somerman was born January 7, 1946 to Sylvia and Nathan
Somerman in Brooklyn, New York, where he lived his entire life.
He joined the United States Maine Corps in January of 1966. After training in
land mine warfare and demolition, Lance Corporal Somerman was deployed in
Vietnam for his last year of service. For most of his years thereafter, Gene dealt
with the afflictions wrought upon his body from his exposure to Agent Orange
during his time in Vietnam. He was always a Marine. Semper Fi.
Helen, his devoted wife of almost fifty years, lost her fight with pancreatic cancer
just last month. And, Gene soon succumbed. He had been fighting his own lengthy
battle with the same dreaded disease, as well as his other health issues.
Eugene is survived by his son Vincent (wife Karen) and daughter Kathleen. He
was blessed with grandchildren Jude and Paige. Gene’s siblings… Martha and
Fran, their families, extended families, and friends, are all saddened with Gene’s
passing, especially following so closely to Helen’s. Yet, all who have witnessed the
humor of Helen and Gene’s marital banter can smile, knowing that the inimitable
couple are now sharing their colorful contests of love with others.
A remembrance service of Eugene’s life is being held on January 16, 2020,
Thursday, at McManus Funeral Home 4601 Avenue N, Brooklyn NY, 11234.
